What is a Writing Prompt?
The world is filled with things to write about. Whether you write articles, stories, poems, or books, you probably see writing ideas all around you every day. But what if you don’t? What if your idea well has run dry? How do you get your creativity back in gear? One of my favorite methods for sparking the muse is the writing prompt. A writing prompt can be a single word or a paragraph… A phrase or photo… Even a smell (or a sound) can act as a writing prompt. The writing prompt gives you a starting place when you don’t know where to start. A single brick in the foundation of a story. So where can you find these writing prompts? You can do an internet search. There are services that will email you a new writing prompt every day. You can read magazines published for writers. They often have a writing prompt of the month. There are entire books of nothing but writing prompts. One of my favorites is The Pocket Muse: Ideas & Inspirations for Writing by Monica Wood. Each page has a sentence, or a quote, or a question to start you thinking. Some pages have a photo. Some, a single word. When I want to write, but I’m just plain stuck, I open up to a random page and follow The Pocket Muse’s lead. Before long, my own creative mind wakes up and takes over. Thanks to the prompts in this book, I’ve explored some fascinating ideas that I never would have come up with on my own. So the next time your muse is napping, find yourself some writing prompts, get busy and write something. |
