The Longest Word in English?
There seems to be some debate as to which word is actually the longest one in the English language. One of the top contenders is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, also spelled pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis. Defined as “a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica or quartz dust”, it's the longest word (45 letters) ever to appear in a non-technical dictionary of English, the Oxford English Dictionary. However, there's evidence that the word was created in 1935 by puzzler Everett Smith as a hypothetical long word that could result from the combination of medical terms. The actual name of the disease is pneumoconiosis, which, at only 14 letters long, falls well short of 'long word' status. |
