The Best Books About Glassblowing
If you're interested in offhand furnace glass blowing, the first book I'd recommend for you to read is "Beginning Glassblowing" by Ed Schmid. Ed's been working with glass and teaching glass blowing for years, and his is the best book I've seen on basic glassblowing skills. After that, Ed's "Advanced Glassworking Techniques" would be my next choice. Another great book, though quite a bit older, is "Glassblowing" by Frank Kulasiewicz. Besides a lot of info on basic glassblowing techniques, it includes plans for building a simple glass furnace. If you're interested in Lampwork (glass blowing using glass rods and tubing in a torch flame), I'd start off with "Creative Glass Blowing" by James Hammesfahr and Clair Stong. It's older and currently out-of-print, but used copies are pretty readily available. It covers scientific, as well as artistic lampwork. And it's loaded with projects and step-by-step illustrations. After that one, I'd go with "Contemporary Lampworking" by Bandhu Scott Dunham. It's a two-volume set, and a bit pricey, but it's current and filled with excellent info. Bandhu is one of the top Lampwork artists in the U.S. and his book demonstrates his vast experience with the craft. There are lots of other books out there on working with molten glass, but these will give you a good start. |
