One Day at the Coffee Shop
“Did you move into the new house yet?” A short, balding man was addressing the barista behind the counter. “No. We had to wait until the eagles were done nesting, so we’re only just now finishing up.” She worked quickly as she talked, deftly pulling two espresso shots at the same time. “And besides, Jerry got a bunch of work all of a sudden just when we thought we were going to have the whole summer to concentrate on the house.” “What’s Jerry doing these days?” The man was busily doctoring his drink with three packets of sugar and most of a cup of ‘half and half’. “He’s kind of a jack of all trades. When our real estate agent found out, she said she had a couple of listings that needed some repairs to make them salable. I guess she liked his work, so she spread the word, and he’s been really busy ever since.” “So what did you do with all of those junk cars you had at your old place?” The balding man took a long pull on his drink. “Well, my girlfriend who I hadn’t seen for years – the one who originally introduced me to Jerry – came by a few months ago. Turns out that her uncle collects and restores old cars. And I finally got Jerry to admit that he was never going to get around to doing anything with those rusting hulks. So, anyway, her uncle came over to take a look…” “And?” He tipped his cup upward, gulping as he swallowed the last of his drink. “Do you remember the original Batmobile? The one from the TV show?” “Yeah, sort of…” “Well, it was made out of a great big gas hog of a car… A 1955 Lincoln, I think… Anyway, we had one of those sitting there, and when the uncle saw it he went nuts!” “Oh yeah?” The man had removed the lid from his cup and was peering wistfully inside, apparently hoping to find a few drops he had missed. “Yeah. Turns out there are only like 200 of those cars left and they’ve become really valuable collectors’ items. He told us one of them just sold at auction recently for $65,000.” “65K? So did he buy yours? How much did you get?” Baldy had added more half and half to his ‘empty’ cup and was now stirring in a couple more packs of sugar. “We worked out a deal with him. He’s going to haul away ALL of the junk cars and spare parts… Even the ones that are just scrap. And he’s going to do a little fixing on the Lincoln and then sell it on eBay. He’ll do all of the work and we’ll get half of the money. Nice deal, huh?” “Yeah. Sweet. Hey, I have to get goin’. My boss is expecting me back from my errands any time now.” Baldy stuffed a handful of sugar packets into his pocket as he headed for the door. “It was good seein’ ya again. Say hi to Jerry.” |
