It's Good to be the King
It’s Good to be the King I wake in the morning; My needs are all met. I never go hungry. I seldom get wet… even when outside it’s raining full tilt. My crown stays bone dry and so does my kilt. My servants anticipate every-thing. I really must say that it’s good to be king. My bath is just right. My meals are perfection. I think that they even enhance the reflection… I see in my dressing room mirror each day. I thought that, by now, my hair all would turn gray. When I see my young self looking back I could sing… I have to admit that it’s good to be king. The queen just adores me; She says so each day. I don’t even mind all her bills that I pay: The furrier, the cobbler, the royal dressmaker, the jeweler, and all sorts of butchers and bakers. She loves to throw parties and show off her ‘bling’. Even though I don’t dance it’s still good to be king. While the queen is high-stepping around the dance floor, I’m never alone for a minute, before… I’m joined by some lovely young maiden, or three, who “came here tonight just to spend time” with ME. In my wild younger days I’d have chased these sweet things, but with age has come wisdom. It’s good to be king. As I look out upon my great kingdom so vast I can’t help but wonder “When I’m gone, will it last?” Will my heirs treat their subjects with fairness, respect? Or will they just plunder and try to collect… as much wealth as they think they can possibly wring from the citizens, solely because THEY’re now kings? I wonder if, by my own actions, I’ve taught them to offer benevolence, caring, and thought… Will they rule with a hand that’s compassionate, just? I’d like to believe that. In them I must trust. As my last days draw near I regret not a thing. I can honestly say “It was good to be king”. By John R. Cumbow - 2007 |
