Got Writers' Block? This exercise will help you break through.

Have you ever been stuck for words?

You're a writer. Or at least you'd like to think of yourself as a writer.

Maybe your work has been published... Maybe not.

Either way, if you've ever written anything, you ARE a writer.

But right this minute, you can't write. You sit staring at a blank page and the words just won't come. Your mind is as empty as the page in front of you.

What do you do?

How do you get past the block and start putting words on the page?

By doing just that.

You start putting words on the page...
ANY WORDS.

Look around you and write about what you see...

Describe your desk.

List the titles of the books on your bookshelf.

Write about the view outside your window... or the texture of your windowless wall.

Describe the pain in your lower back from too much gardening yesterday.

It doesn't matter what you write, as long as you write something.

Start writing, even if you just keep writing over and over "I can't think of anything to write so I'm sitting here typing gibberish onto a blank page."

No matter what, keep writing for at least ten minutes.

At some point during that time your mind will most likely catch onto an idea, and you'll have a real direction to write toward.

Even if you spend the entire ten minutes writing nothing but garbage, you will have, at the very least, put in some dedicated writing time....

You will have reinforced the habit of writing something every day.

And that's the real secret to being, or becoming, a writer.

You must write every day.
