Drink Reishi Tea - Improve Your Health
Chinese and Japanese medical practitioners have long considered the Reishi fungus, also known as Ling Chi (or Ling Zhi), to be the most important item in their herbal medicine chests. Western medicine has only recently begun to realize the healing value of these fungi. More and more clinical tests have shown positive results in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions, including: heart disease, allergies, liver and kidney problems, high cholesterol, hepatitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and a number of cancers and other immune system disorders. Preparing Reishi Mushrooms for use: In Traditional Asian Medicine the texts call for 1.5 to 9 grams of dried mushrooms per day, prepared as a decoction, or tea. We generally use 3-5 grams. This daily amount can be split between morning and evening. The dried mushrooms can be coarsely ground in a coffee grinder (1 rounded tablespoon of ground mushrooms = approximately 3 grams) or broken into smaller pieces (a heaping tablespoon of fingerprint-sized pieces = about 2.5 to 3 grams). This mildly pungent tea can be brewed by filling a stainless steel tea-ball with the desired amount of ground mushrooms or by placing the mushrooms loose in a stainless or enamel (not aluminum) pan of pure, non-chlorinated water. Start with 1 to 1 1/2 cups of water for each finished cup you desire. Bring the mushrooms and water to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Simmering for 15-20 minutes will make a fairly strong tea; for maximum benefit, simmer the tea from 1-2 hours, adding water as necessary. You may strain out the mushroom grounds through an unbleached coffee filter before drinking. The grounds can be reused until they no longer produce color in the tea. Ideally, tea should be brewed fresh each day. However, brewed tea may be successfully refrigerated (in a glass container) for a few days at a time and reheated as desired. Reishi tea can be sweetened or combined with other flavors to taste. Ground or whole dried mushrooms should be stored in the refrigerator in sealed glass jars or other airtight containers to protect them from moisture and odors. Reishi mushrooms are naturally variegated in color, and may range from off-white/gray to yellow, orange, rust, brown or mahogany in hue. Warnings: Reishi is not recommended for anyone who is taking blood-thinning medications, as it may increase bleeding time. Side effects are rare but can include abdominal upset. If pregnant, consult your healthcare provider before taking this, or any product.
